Lecturers in City’s Festival of Words

While welcoming students to SHU, Journalism Lecturer Carolyn Waudby and Media Studies Lecturer Mike Hutchinson  were busy behind the scenes preparing a project for the Off The Shelf Festival.

Dark River is a collaborative project of prints and poetry, inspired by the River Don. The idea came from Mike who has a long fascination with rivers and maps. He and Carolyn visited the source of the Don on the moors above Holmfirth, then walked the Sheffield stretch from Middlewood to Meadowhall.

Mike’s prints are derived from locations along the river, such as Dragon’s Den at Wharncliffe Side, while Carolyn researched mythology, superstition and the folklore of plants for the poems.

The work was brought alive at an event at the Kelham Island Industrial Museum, Sheffield, where Carolyn read some of the poems to a backdrop of Mike’s images.

A website based on the idea of the medieval map was also launched www.darkriver.org.uk

An exhibition of all the work is currently at the museum until November 1. And you can hear an interview with both the lecturers here.
